<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif"'>Thanks
to everyone that participated in this talk and for helping me out, providing
info and insight. I learned "stuff" about DNS in general and
learned some cool little bit along the way as well, and even learned a lot
about my cruddy ISP, AT&T, who has been nothing but a giant headache since
Day One (I already knew that they were cruddy but it's good to know that they
are equally cruddy and other people have experienced trouble with them, as
backward as that is). That's a good thing too. If we weren't locked
HARD into contracts with them (before my time) I would have cut and run long
ago. The clock is ticking though!<br>
<br>
ATT agreed (or a cool engineer did anyway...not the red-tape-pushers that don't
know DNS from a hole in the ground) to the delegation and we got our PTR Record
in place and we are again sending mail to those folks that do rDNS on inbound
mail. So, <b>we're back in business, everything is fixed and running
smoothly</b>, and <b><span style='color:#C00000;background:yellow'>youse
guys/gals have again proven that IT Discuss IS THE BEST!</span></b> A
simple question posted yesterday and within 24 hours not only are we
"fixed," but I've learned a great deal as well, and I even (get this)
ENJOYED MYSELF and the responses were as much entertainment as they were
informational. But as we techies all know, often/usually these are one in
the same.<br>
<br>
Thanks again, Gang. Y'all ROCK. I'm proud to be associated with
such a cool group, even as a distant lurker. Or does that even count?<br>

While they still maintain control of the IP address space registered with<br>
ARIN, ATT does have the ability to delegate reverse DNS resolution to their<br>
customers. They have delegated multiple class C address spaces that we
use<br>
to us and we use DNS Made Easy for reverse resolution. It works
flawlessly.<br>
Inexpensive and customer service is always great, plus they have a global<br>
Anycast network providing 100% uptime SLA.<br>
<br>
Of course, getting ATT to make the delegation may be easier said than done in<br>
your area too ... :)<br>

PTR is the reverse pointer for an IP Address.<br>
<br>
If ARIN has assigned the IP of 1.1.1.1 to AT&T (place the appropriate ip of<br>
course in place) then the only organization that can set PTR is AT&T.<br>
PERIOD<br>
<br>
What you can do however is create a smtp server using EasyDNS or other<br>
services and then have your outgoing mail actually tunneled through their ip<br>
- which they in turn control the PTR for.<br>
<br>
I would suggest however - calling AT&T directly<br>
<br>
Dial 1-888-613-6330, Prompt 3, then 1.<br>

ATT also has their online provisioning tool here<br>

At my previous employer we had the same exact problem with our service<br>
provider and the way we overcame it was to move all of our DNS services to<br>
EasyDNS. They provided the PTR records as well as all of the standard DNS<br>
services. The other advantage is that anything to do with DNS was handled
by<br>
one company and it wasn't dependent on any service provider. So if we
found<br>
a service provider that offered better services for a better price we could<br>
move to them without worrying about who would handle pieces and parts of our<br>
DNS needs. If EasyDNS provides such services, I'd be willing to bet there<br>
are others as well.<br>

The "owner" of the IP address (ATT) is the master of the reverse DNS.
If they<br>
won't change it doesn't matter what a 3rd party DNS service is set to.<br>
Say bye bye to AT-T if possible. We moved off of them long ago as well as<br>
I've moved 2 clients off of AT-T. In Chattanooga Comcast is a surprisingly<br>
great service to go with for small business, but for more demanding needs our<br>
power utility (EPB) offers fiber internet.<br>
<br>
I don't know where you are, but in the past when I lived in Atlanta I moved<br>
my company there to Cbeyond communications from AT-T (both data and phone).<br>
It was a great move. I can't speak to Cbeyond's reputation now (that was over<br>
5 years ago) but check them out if they are in your area.<br>
<br>
If I recall I went with the Beyond Voice package.<br>

You may want to look at EasyDNS.com <<a href="http://EasyDNS.com">http://EasyDNS.com</a>>
. They have a<br>
reverse DNS service available, along with the regular DNS services.<br>

Thanks for the feedback. That's what I expected too but was told
"no."<br>
<br>
How long ago was your exchange with them? This could be new policy.
Lots of<br>
frustrated folks on the 'net about this but I just can't move this domain to<br>
ATT in the middle of the week. I shouldn't have to anyway...like they are<br>
holding me hostage.<br>

I don't know about the specific IP Flex service but I've had AT&T do a<br>
reverse DNS entry for us in the past to our mail server for the church.
We<br>
have Domain registration with Network Solutions, Web hosting on a different<br>
provider and our reverse dns entry from AT&T (Bellsouth is who has it<br>
listed).<br>
<br>
All I had to do was send an email to an address that AT&T gave me and they<br>
made the dns change.<br>

Subject: [itdiscuss] DNS Help! - rDNS/PTR<br>
<br>
So we recently moved 100% of our Internet services to AT&T "IP
Flex" service.<br>
We're having an issue with Reverse DNS when trying to send emails to some<br>
domains that do the rDNS lookup on each message because we don't have it in<br>
place.<br>
<br>
I've tried SPF, TXT, SRV, etc. - no dice.<br>
<br>
Domain registrar is currently Network Solutions.<br>
<br>
AT&T won't create a PTR record for me pointing back to my mail server
unless<br>
they "host" the domain for me, which I don't want to do for multiple
reasons,<br>
including the downtime that such a move would incur.<br>
<br>
What can I do? Is a SmartHost an option? I'm not familiar with them
but am<br>
desparate now and ATT is not being at all flexible.<br>
